World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a UN agency with 193 member states dedicated to promoting and safeguarding intellectual property worldwide. WIPO helps countries collaborate on developing international IP laws, administers treaties, and offers dispute resolution services like arbitration and mediation. As more creators turn ideas into valuable assets through IP, WIPO works to build a balanced international system that fosters innovation and creativity for everyone’s benefit. This session will tackle two key challenges: IP sharing during crises and protecting literary and artistic works. Delegates are invited to develop international frameworks that regulate intellectual property and create an environment where inventors, artists, creators, and businesses can all flourish.
Topic: The Protection of Literary and Artistic Works
Protecting literary and artistic works, including literature, music, films, and digital media, is essential for ensuring creators are recognized and fairly paid for their contributions to culture and the economy. While these creative works enrich society and generate jobs and revenue, the digital age has made protection harder due to online piracy, illegal copying, and difficulty enforcing rights across borders. In this session, WIPO will work on creating stronger systems to fight piracy and unauthorized distribution while also ensuring people, especially in developing countries and marginalized communities, can still access cultural and educational resources. Delegates will explore policies like fair payment models, grants, and incentives that support creators and encourage continued artistic innovation while balancing protection with accessibility.
