Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS)
The Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) brings together 79 countries spanning three regions: Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Established in 1975, the OACPS aims to advance the political, economic, and social development of its members through strengthened international trade, sustainable growth, responsible governance, and the eradication of poverty. The OACPS exists in compliance with the Georgetown Agreement as revised in 2019, which emphasizes the solidarity between the various land-locked and small island Global South states that comprise the organization while affirming their commitment to the aforementioned goals.
Topic: Sustainable Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Security
Climate change continues to threaten the stability of many OACPS nations, where food insecurity undermines both livelihoods and long-term development. Fisheries, which provide food security and a stable income to millions of people worldwide, are acutely threatened by the climate crisis: the ocean absorbs most of the excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in the destruction of entire marine ecosystems. Sustainable agriculture, an alternative to conventional farming that emphasizes environmental protection and the use of renewable energy, has the potential to counteract these effects. Throughout the past 30 years, agricultural production in several countries has outweighed the growth in greenhouse gas emissions from this process due, in large part, to the adoption of sustainable farming strategies across the globe. Delegates must explore innovative, collaborative solutions to ensure resilient food systems while balancing sustainability, trade, and economic growth.
